Symbol or Provocation? Venezuela’s Brooch Rattles CARICOM
A recent Caribbean visit by Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, has triggered a diplomatic dispute with Guyana, after she wore a brooch depicting a map that includes Guyana’s disputed Essequibo region as part of Venezuela.
Rodríguez visited Barbados and Grenada earlier this month, where the symbol was prominently displayed during official meetings. The move drew strong criticism from Guyana’s president, Irfaan Ali, who described it as a “provocative assertion” of Venezuela’s territorial claim.
In a letter to Caribbean leaders, Ali said the display was more than symbolic, noting that the long-running border dispute is currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for resolution. He warned that such actions could undermine confidence in a peaceful legal process.
Venezuela has defended the gesture. Rodríguez dismissed the criticism, saying the brooch reflects what her country considers its historic territory. Foreign Minister Yván Gil also rejected Guyana’s concerns, calling them an attempt to distract from Venezuela’s claim.
The controversy has placed pressure on the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), a 15-member regional bloc that includes both countries. In a statement, CARICOM acknowledged Guyana’s concerns and reiterated its firm support for Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The group also urged member states to respect international law and avoid actions that could affect ongoing legal proceedings.
The Essequibo region, which makes up about two-thirds of Guyana’s territory, has been at the centre of a dispute dating back to an 1899 arbitration ruling that awarded the land to Guyana. Venezuela has never accepted that decision.
Tensions have intensified in recent years, especially after major oil discoveries in the area by companies including ExxonMobil. The case was formally taken to the ICJ in 2018, and hearings are expected to continue as both sides present their arguments.
While Rodríguez’s visit was meant to strengthen ties with Caribbean nations, the brooch has instead highlighted ongoing divisions within the region and raised concerns about the future of diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Guyana.
