President of the Senate, Carolyn Trench-Sandiford, recently participated in the 22nd ParlAmericas Plenary Assembly and the 10th Gathering of the Open Parliament Network held in Ottawa, Canada last week.

The regional meeting brought together parliamentarians, government officials, academics, development partners, and private sector representatives from across the Americas and the Caribbean under the theme, “Parliamentary Leadership for Shared Prosperity: Advancing Trade, Innovation, and Security in a Changing World.”

During the assembly, Senator Trench-Sandiford moderated a working session titled “Open Parliament in Action: Strengthening Transparency, Public Engagement, and Oversight for Better Trade Outcomes.” The discussion focused on promoting transparency, accountability, and public participation in parliamentary processes and trade policy development.

The event also provided an opportunity for regional dialogue on democratic governance, trade, innovation, sustainable development, and security, while emphasising the role of parliaments in strengthening democratic institutions and encouraging economic growth.
