Senate President: Disrespect on Both Sides

And after that back and forth, the Senate was suspended for approximately two hours. Upon resumption President Sandiford indicated that she reviewed the available video recordings of the exchanges and found that there was disrespect on both sides of the aisle.

Carloyn Trench-Sandiford, President of the Senate

“Based on the video recording, Senator Pitt made the utterance of “the need to school on English and understand that you cant fix stupid.” Senator Chanona made an interruption on the audio issue whereby I suspended the parliament for the matter to be addressed. Upon resumption of the parliament, Senator Pitts made the utterance, “you mean they didn’t hear what I call the man, slow”. Senator Hector Guerra responded saying, “what is slow is the Senator’s sense of style. Senator Pitt’s utterance was, “ so we the get personal today? My sense of style slow, but you the wear skirt today”. At this pointed I intervened and used the opportunity to impress upon members the need to conduct themselves in a manner becoming of the Senate and the importance of respect for each other, the chair and the Chamber. This is all in the records and I will not repeat.”

President Sandiford ultimately used her authority to strike Senator Guerra’s statement off the record.
