Coye Urges Courage on Bus Concession
And those tense moments in the Senate today emerge during the debate on a motion to give the National Bus Company of Belize a limited concession to run its buses along the Western and Southern Corridors. When the debate turned to the law behind it, Government Senator Christopher Coye had a pointed message for his colleagues.
Christopher Coye, Government Senator
“I think the leader of Government Business spoke to this provision section 115 of the act having been in place since 1985 or thereabout, over forty years. the act itself has been around since 1938. So it is really, really old law. The unfortunate reality it seems in many instances is that we feel safer holding on to status qou, avoiding change. We have been independent for over forty years, forty-five years. where have we gone since then. Look at a place like Singapore, what have they done in a matter of sixty, seventy years and where are we. In the alter of history, do we honor cowardice or courage. The experience in this public transportation industry is one of consistent and constant failure for reasons we have all seen and experience. But we want to remain the same, maintain that status qou. Are we so afraid to change.”
