“Seven Councillors vs 700 Delegates, I Take the Delegates”: Allan Pollard Files for City Mayor
Allan Pollard has officially filed his candidacy for mayor of Belize City today, surrounded by dozens of supporters. He is staking his campaign on delegate support rather than the backing of his fellow councillors, none of whom were seen beside him at the submission this morning.
When incumbent-backed candidate Eluide Miller filed his candidacy last Friday, the majority of the city council flanked him. When asked about it, Pollard rejected suggestions that the lack of endorsements reflects concerns about his leadership.
“I have the support of the people, and that’s all that matters,” Pollard said in an interview amongst his supporters.
“Seven councillors versus 700 delegates. I take the delegates”, added in a later interview.
He also said he harbours no resentment toward Mayor Bernard Wagner’s endorsement of Miller despite questions over family ties between the two.
“The mayor cannot deny my capabilities or me as a candidate, but he has the right to support who he wants to support, and we respect that,” Pollard said.
