While former BEL employees are still taking their fight for severance to the streets, the standoff at Digi appears to have cooled. For months, the Belize Communication Workers for Justice had been pressing for payments they say they were owed. But Digi C.E.O. Ivan Tesucum says the company has been quietly settling claims with members who come into the office. Tesucum says that calmer period has allowed Digi to shift its focus back to growth and development, while still addressing the workers who spent years helping to build Belize’s telecom giant.

“My focus is ensuring that Digi continues to grow, that we continue with our mandate to ensure that we transform our country and continue to lead in digital transformation.”

“We haven’t heard from the BC WJ in a while. What’s the status in terms of percentage of those who have already received and accepted their severance?”

Ivan Tesucum

“So from the from that aspect of it we continue to pay. And so those who have collected already is somewhere north of seventy-five percent. And so the checks are ready. It’s a matter of them coming to collect it really. And so that, that’s where we’re at.”
