Shot Dead Near Police Checkpoint

The family and friends of Eric Nelson are mourning his death after the Belize City resident was fatally shot on Saturday night near the intersection of Lakeview and Banak Streets.

Nelson was not known to be involved in criminal activity. His death came less than twenty-four hours after he received a promotion at the call centre.

The shooting occurred less than ten yards from a police surveillance camera and approximately one hundred yards from a permanent police checkpoint. Investigators are expected to review surveillance footage as they continue searching for leads in the case.

As they struggle to come to terms with the shocking and unexpected killing of their loved one, Nelson’s family has appealed for videos from the scene to be removed from social media and has requested privacy during this time of grief.

The department is expected to update the media this afternoon.
