Spirit’s Exit Leaves Belizeans Paying More to Fly to the US
Belize’s skies could soon feel a little more expensive and a lot less flexible. With Spirit Airlines stepping away from the global aviation market, destinations that leaned on low cost travel are already bracing for the impact. Here at home, tourism officials say the loss of the budget carrier leaves a noticeable gap, especially for travelers coming out of the United States. Spirit launched its first flight to Belize from South Florida in November 2025, opening the door for more price conscious visitors to easily reach the country. According to the Belize Tourism Industry Association, that access mattered. BTIA President Efren Perez says Spirit helped make Belize a viable option for travelers watching their wallets, and its exit is a setback. Stakeholders warn that with fewer low fare flights, ticket prices could climb and budget travelers could feel the squeeze. The bigger worry isn’t just Spirit’s exit; it’s how rising costs and reduced air access could hurt Belize’s competitiveness in the tourism market.

“It is quite unfortunate that Spirit Airline has exited the market. It places a huge strain on travelers globally from all the markets they have been servicing. From Belize specifically, air connectivity has been one of our critical drivers. The entry of a low-cost traveler like spirit airline has played a very important role in the democratizing of travel in Belize, making the destination more affordable to a wider segment of travelers, particularly to the U.S. market and particularly from their hubs in Florida. So I think the disruption in air service will really have an impact on the price sensitivity of the travelers who chose Sprit as one of their airlines of choice.”
