“They Call Him Smiley”: Grandmother Mourns After Fatal Crash 

Delphina Brooks says she will never forget the moment she saw her grandson Theodore “Smiley” Swazo lying on a hospital bed after Sunday morning’s deadly motorcycle crash. 

Brooks said she was awakened shortly after midnight by a knock on her window. A young man told her Swazo had been taken to hospital after an accident. 

Swazo was one of three people killed in the crash on Mahogany Street around 2 a.m. on Sunday. Brooks said she was told Swazo was riding with friends when his helmet fell off and the group turned back to retrieve it. Another motorcycle then crashed into them. 

“He was at the back and he fly over on the pavement,” she said.

Brooks described her grandson as well liked in the community and devoted to his young daughter, whom he had spent time with just days before the crash.

“The last time he spent with his daughter was last week, Wednesday and Thursday, because he come from Caye Tuesday because he was working at Caye. And he spent time with his daughter those two days. He bring her here, come look for me,” she said. 

Brooks does not believe the crash was intentional but is calling for an end to reckless motorcycle riding. “Make them stop drive cycle crazy,” she said. “People life dih go for a motorcycle, innocent people life dih go.”

The crash also claimed the lives of Allan Arnold and Darwin Monroy. 

ASP Stacy Smith said this afternoon during the police brief that “one motorcycle helmet was recovered from the scene.” She confirmed that the police investigation continues to reveal further details.
