Trump’s Green Card Policy Forces Immigrants Back Home
The Trump administration has announced a sweeping change to the green card application process that would require thousands of people seeking permanent residency in the United States to leave the country and apply from their home nations.
The rule, announced Friday by US Citizenship and Immigration Services, ends the longstanding practice of allowing applicants to complete the process while remaining in the US. For many, that means leaving behind jobs, families and communities for a process that can take months or even years to complete.
The change is expected to affect a significant portion of the legal immigration population. In fiscal year 2024 alone, about 1.4 million people obtained lawful permanent residence in the US.
Government officials framed the move as a way to reduce illegal overstays, saying that requiring applicants to return home “reduces the need to find and remove those who decide to slip into the shadows and remain in the US illegally after being denied residency”. Exemptions for extraordinary circumstances were noted but not detailed.
Some democratic lawmakers, on the other hand, called the policy “cruel” and damaging to America’s ability to attract skilled workers. One congressman warned it would benefit competitors like China and Russia by driving talented professionals elsewhere, while immigration analysts described it as illogical and likely to make the US a less competitive place for business.
While cracking down on illegal immigration has been a top priority for the Trump administration, the new requirement is expected to face legal challenges in the coming weeks.
