Two Charged for Illegal Logging in the Sibun Forest Reserve 

The Forest Department has charged two people in connection with a suspected illegal logging operation uncovered inside the Sibun Forest Reserve. 

The investigation began on June 29 and 30, when Forest Department officers reportedly found signs of illegal logging, including a road leading into the reserve, an extensive logging operation, and cut lumber. The site and materials were documented as evidence. 

On July 1st, officers acting on a search warrant, accompanied by police, searched a property connected to the case and seized a tractor, portable sawmill and trailer. 

As part of the investigation, Forest Department officers were later authorised to transport lumber to assess the extent of the suspected illegal operation. The department says the officers were intercepted by individuals who attempted to prevent them from carrying out their duties.

Two people have since been charged in the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court. The Department says the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may follow against others suspected of involvement.

The department is reminding the public that illegal logging, unauthorised activities in forest reserves and protected areas, and attempts to obstruct officers carrying out lawful enforcement duties are subject to prosecution.

The department said, “Members of the public are encouraged to help stop these activities by reporting suspected illegal logging or interference with lawful enforcement operations to the Forest Department hotline at (501) 610-1524 or to the nearest police station.”
