Two Motorist Killed in Back-to-Back Collisions with Same Driver

Two men lost their lives in a chain-reaction traffic accident on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway late Saturday night. Police confirmed the victims as twenty-six-year-old Elmer Cal, a laborer of Red Bank Village, and fifty-one-year-old Customs Officer Willie Cruz of Independence Village. Investigators say the tragedy unfolded when a Mazda Tribute collided with Cal’s motorcycle, flinging him onto the pavement. Moments later, Cruz crashed into the open door of the vehicle while attempting to pass, leading to his fatal injuries. ASP Stacy Smith has more details.

“The investigation commenced on Saturday, thirtieth May, 2026, when police in Independence were advised of a fatal road traffic accident on Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway in the vicinity of the Punta Gorda junction. The responding officers reported that upon their arrival they observed two motorcycles and three vehicles, all of which showed signs of damage. The officers also observed the unresponsive bodies of fifty-one-year-old Willie Cruz, a Belizean customs officer of Independence Village, and twenty-six-year-old Elmer Cal, a Belizean laborer of Red Bank Village. What the preliminary investigation suggests is that there was a collision, an initial collision between the Mazda Tribute which was being driven by Andy August and a motorcycle being driven by Elmer Cal. This collision caused Cal to be flung from the cycle, and it is reported that Mr. August stopped his vehicle and went out to check on Mr. Cal. While Mr. August’s vehicle was stationary on the road, it is reported that Mr. Cruz, who was traveling on a motorcycle, collided into the open door of Mr. August’s vehicle which too caused him to be flung, and both of these gentlemen succumbed to the injuries that they sustained Police have since issued a notice of intended prosecution to Mr. Andy August as the investigation continues.”

Following the incident, the victims were transported to the Dangriga morgue, where they were pronounced dead just after midnight.
