UB Students Act Out Ethics Theories at Belmopan Symposium

Every student at the University of Belize must take an ethics course, and today some of them put the theory into practice. UB President Dr. Vincent Palacio says the Ethics Symposium in Belmopan is where students see how ethics theories apply in real life. Students acted out the theories in drama, and heard from the president of the public service union and an assistant commissioner of police. The theme was leadership, governance and citizenship. We spoke with Dr. Palacio at the event.

“So here we have a seminar, a workshop of sorts, where the students come together to look at various theorists and see how these ethics theories apply in real life. So what I just experienced, they had some drama. We had our students playing out some of these theories. It was quite interesting. And the key part, though, is having these students now listen to some persons out there who use ethics or who practice ethics or who know the value of it.”

“Why is it important for every single student of the University of Belize to take an ethics course?”

Dr. Vincent Palacio

“Yes, you know, it’s in everything we do. Ethics is important. There are a few classes that every student must take. There is a class in critical thinking, and one in ethics, that you were talking about. And you could imagine everybody needs to be ethical, and why we have rules and laws, and why should we follow these rules and laws, and what is our role as citizens in the country. So it’s an important course. I myself enjoy listening to some of the theorists and seeing how it applies to our daily lives.”

The panel included representatives from government, the unions and the Belize Police Department.
