US-Iran Tensions Escalate as Naval Blockade Threatens Strait of Hormuz

The United States and Iran are moving closer to a wider confrontation as Washington prepares to resume a naval blockade near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, while attacks and threats continue across the region.

US Central Command said the blockade would restart at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, following the collapse of a ceasefire between Washington and Tehran. Iran has warned it would deliver a “devastating response” if the United States targets a suspected underground nuclear facility known as Pickaxe Mountain.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, with a significant portion of global oil shipments passing through the narrow waterway.

The renewed tensions have already affected regional security. Kuwait’s military said it was responding to hostile aerial attacks, while authorities across the Gulf region remain on alert. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency has advised airlines to avoid airspace over Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and parts of the Gulf of Oman because of increased risks.

US President Donald Trump also reversed a decision to impose a 20% reimbursement fee on cargo moving through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said the charge, which was intended to cover US security operations in the waterway, would instead be replaced by trade and investment agreements with Gulf countries.

The announcement came after international criticism that such fees could violate rules governing international waterways.

Meanwhile, oil prices have climbed as markets react to the renewed uncertainty. Benchmark Brent crude reached its highest level in more than a month following the breakdown of the ceasefire and the threat of further military action.
