What Can Belize Gain from the Commonwealth Summit?
Prime Minister John Briceño is in Antigua and Barbuda for the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), where leaders from 56 countries are discussing economic development, climate financing, trade and investment.
The summit is intended to help member countries build partnerships and secure practical support for their development priorities. The 2026 meeting is being held under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”
The summit officially opened November 3rd, in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda. CHOGM is the Commonwealth’s principal forum for dialogue and collective decision-making, bringing together heads of government every two years to address shared challenges and explore opportunities for cooperation.

The Commonwealth Secretariat says the meeting is expected to help mobilise investment for development projects, expand trade between member countries, improve access to financing and create opportunities for young people.
For Belize, those discussions are particularly relevant as the country continues to face the effects of climate change while seeking investment and financing for national development.
According to Government, Briceño is engaging with fellow Commonwealth leaders on issues including affordability, climate financing and other development priorities. These engagements provide opportunities to exchange perspectives, strengthen partnerships and discuss solutions to challenges affecting Belize and other Commonwealth nations.
One of the issues being considered is how small and vulnerable countries can access financing without being placed under additional economic pressure.
The Commonwealth is also considering ways to remove barriers to trade between member countries and expand opportunities for investment.
For Belize, stronger partnerships within the Commonwealth could help attract investment, expand economic cooperation and provide access to technical assistance to support national development.
Briceño is expected to return to Belize on Friday, with Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde as the acting Prime Minister during his absence.
