Who Now Approves Building Permits in San Pedro?

The Central Building Authority (CBA) announced the decertification of the San Pedro Building Unit.

In a public notice, CBA and the Ministry of Infrastructure said the decision would take effect last Wednesday. It would mean that CBA would take over responsibility for building permit applications, plan reviews and inspections across the municipality.

Property owners and agents with active applications previously submitted through the San Pedro unit are now being directed to contact the CBA’s headquarters in Belmopan for updates.

Meanwhile, the San Pedro Town Council said, “All building unit services continue uninterrupted.” It added that it is in dialogue with the CBA.

The council said it takes the decision seriously and wants to meet every requirement under Section 13E of the Belize Building Act. It has asked the CBA for the audit report and recommendations behind the decision.

“The Council has already taken steps to strengthen the Building Unit’s operations, including installing the required software and updating outstanding records. We have also requested that the CBA reconsider its decision in light of these efforts and our commitment to addressing any outstanding deficiencies,” the council said.

The council says it will issue further guidance once the CBA responds to their request.
