Who Wanted Shamar Smith Dead?

Shamar Smith was shot and killed on Pelican Street in Belize City on Thursday night, October 8, in a shooting that police say could be linked to rivalries in the city.

According to ACP Hilberto Romero, police responded to the scene around 9:30 p.m. and found Smith’s lifeless body in a drain.

“Information says Smith was in the area hanging out with other persons when the persons arrived on a vehicle and fired several shots towards his direction,” Romero said.

Smith was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Romero confirmed that Smith was known to police and had previously been charged in connection with a shooting incident. He said investigators do not believe the killing is related to another murder reported in Belize City earlier that evening.

Smith’s mother, Sandy Smith, said she was at work when she received the news that her son had been killed. She initially struggled to believe the report before learning that he was at the scene.

“That not something nice that nobody want to see, them pickney ‘pon the ground,” she said.

Sandy acknowledged that her son had made choices in his life that she could not control, but said she continued to advise him.
