BDF Soldier Among Three Killed in Separate Crashes 

Three separate crashes over the weekend have left three people dead, including a Belize Defence Force volunteer soldier.

ASP Stacy Smith detailed all three cases during this afternoon’s police press briefing.

The latest death is that of 23-year-old Elvin Chubb, a BDF volunteer soldier of Maya Mopan village. Chubb died Sunday after a collision involving a motorcycle, an SUV and a delivery truck near Silk Grass village, Stann Creek District. “Investigators responded and upon their arrival they observed a gravely injured male person and a motorcycle that was partially lodged under the damaged front bumper of the SUV,” ASP Smith said. The delivery truck sustained rear damage. Police have issued a notice of intended prosecution to the SUV driver, though the circumstances remain under investigation. The driver of the SUV has been served a notice of intended prosecution.

A second crash, between Duck Run and Billy White villages in the Cayo District, killed 46-year-old Jaime Catalan of San Marcos village late Friday night. Police believe Catalan’s motorcycle collided with another motorcycle on the scene. The second rider has been detained, and police have obtained a urine sample from him. “The circumstances of the collision remain under investigation,” ASP Smith said. 

The third fatality occurred near Mile 76 on the George Price Highway on Saturday evening. Patrick Chun, 55, died after his motorcycle collided with a bus while he was overtaking another vehicle. According to ASP Smith, the bus has been impounded for inspection, and a notice of intended prosecution has been served on its driver. The bus sustained damage to its driver’s side, while Chun’s motorcycle was extensively damaged.
