Police today destroyed one of the largest drug seizures in recent years.

Commissioner of Police Dr Richard Rosado confirmed that authorities disposed of cocaine seized in Neuland, Corozal, and cannabis intercepted in the Lords Bank area earlier this month.

Pursuant to the Misuse of Drugs Act, Rosado said an application was made to the magistrate for destruction. “The magistrate having been satisfied that the said controlled substance can be destroyed without any prejudice to any pending criminal proceedings, duly granted the order,” he said.

Police say the destroyed drugs included about 1,215.6 pounds of cocaine and 1,176.5 pounds of cannabis, with an estimated street value of around $13 million.

Assistant Commissioner Gualberto Garcia said heavy security was needed throughout the destruction process, with officers deployed across multiple sites to ensure everything was properly secured and transported.

“We always have these kinds of operations; it’s just that this is one of the bigger ones that we have,” Garcia said.

Despite getting the approval to discard such a massive volume of narcotics, Rosado says the investigation is ongoing and “progress[ing] appropriately” as officers now examine the discovery 15 containers of suspected aviation fuel and lighting equipment in the Neuland area of Corozal
