Belize is turning up the heat on disaster preparedness, and it’s getting a little help from Cuba.

Minister of Disaster Risk Management Henry Charles Usher met with a high-level Cuban delegation to strengthen cooperation on everything from early warning systems to climate resilience.

According to the ministry’s statement, the meeting brought together local officials and representatives from Cuba’s Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment, known as CITMA.

Both sides dug into plans for a joint support programme that could see closer technical cooperation between the two countries. That includes possible exchanges of experts, training opportunities, and even a future Belizean visit to Cuba to keep the momentum going.

Officials discussed improving early warning systems, strengthening hazard monitoring, and standardising how risks are assessed at the community level. In simple terms: better data, faster alerts, and smarter planning.

Cuba has long been recognized in the region for its strong disaster response systems, particularly when it comes to hurricanes. Belize is now looking to tap into that experience to boost its own readiness.

The Cuban delegation, led by First Deputy Minister Rudy Montero Mata, also explored the possibility of deploying technical experts to Belize. Those specialists could help train local teams, build capacity, and share hands-on knowledge in disaster management.
