Just 16 Days Left…Are You Ready?
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is now just 16 days away, with the tournament set to open on June 13 and the final scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. But as the clock winds down, the buildup has been dominated by controversy over ticket prices and growing uncertainty over whether Iran will even make it to the United States.
FIFA tripled the price of its top-tier World Cup final tickets, with the most expensive seats now listed at $32,970 USD, up from a previous high of $10,990. For context, the priciest ticket to the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar ran about $1,600.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the pricing strategy, saying the organisation is responding to market demand in the United States. “We have to look at the market,” Infantino said. “We are in a market in which entertainment is the most developed in the world, so we have to apply market rates.”
At the same time, concerns are growing over Iran’s participation in the tournament amid rising tensions involving the United States. Iran’s football chief said the country’s World Cup host is “FIFA, not Mr Trump or America” while calling for respect toward Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps if the national team is to travel to the United States for the competition.
The uncertainty comes as military tensions between the US and Iran continue to escalate. According to BBC reports, the US launched new strikes on southern Iran on Monday, targeting missile sites and boats allegedly attempting to place mines.
US Central Command said the strikes were carried out in self-defence to protect American troops from threats posed by Iranian forces. In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it had shot down a US drone and fired at another drone and a fighter jet that allegedly entered Iranian airspace. Iranian state media also said the country reserves the right to retaliate against any violations of ceasefire agreements.
