New Flights to Belize? Government in Talks with BermudAir

The Government of Belize is in discussions with BermudAir about potential new routes to Belize, even as the global airline industry faces cutbacks and route reductions.

Tourism Minister Anthony Mahler confirmed that talks with the airline have been ongoing for some time, with early discussions even touching on the possibility of branding an aircraft under a Belizean name. He said BermudAir, a premium carrier, sees Belize as a strong fit for its business model.

“We’ve been talking about multiple destinations from the United States, Guatemala, and maybe one more. They announced earlier than we had anticipated; we wanted some more time to look at their proposal and what they’re asking. But they are very much interested in working with Belize,” Mahler explained.

While expressing optimism about the airline’s interest, Mahler cautioned that discussions are still ongoing and no agreement has been finalised.

The announcement comes at a time when airlines are tightening operations. Spirit Airlines and JetBlue have both pulled routes from Belize, while American Airlines has reduced domestic flights.

Mahler acknowledged the challenges but said Belize is working to secure new connections. “These are trying times for the entire industry…You lose some, and you gain some. I believe another airline will increase its capacity to Belize,” he said.

Mahler added that the government is in talks with existing carriers to expand service from new U.S. cities, with at least four or five potential new routes currently under consideration.
