PUC Urges Vigilance as Electricity Bills Climb
Belizeans nationwide are growing increasingly concerned over soaring electricity bills. Amid the complaints voiced by Belize Electricity Limited’s customers on social media, the Public Utilities Commission has issued a notice reminding Belizeans to closely monitor their electricity meters and compare readings with monthly bills. Previously, BEL attributed the perceived spike to the rising temperatures and encourage customers to take measures to keep their homes and businesses cool to prevent appliances from driving up costs. In the notice, the PUC explained that rising temperatures can drive higher household consumption, however, they also explained the steps customers can take if they spot differences compared to their past electricity usage. Customers are advised to first contact Belize Electricity Limited’s Customer Care Department for clarification, and if concerns remain unresolved, escalate the matter through the PUC’s complaint channels. The PUC noted that this reminder is a part of its regularly conducted consumer education campaigns regarding utility services and the complaint mechanisms available to consumers to help Belizeans understand their bills and be aware of the complaint resolution process should concerns arise. The PUC stated that complaints can cover a range of utility bills and several issues, including billing errors, metering problems, service disconnections or interruptions, installation issues, damage, safety concerns, and other utility-related practices.
