‘Todeh Fih Me, Tomorrow Fih You’: Technicians To Sue Building Authority
A group of about 100 architectural and engineering technicians is preparing a constitutional challenge against new building regulations they say could put them out of business and drive up construction costs for ordinary Belizeans.
The Association of Architectural and Engineering Technicians of Belize announced its intention to challenge the Belize Building Code, amendments to the Belize Building Regulations 2022, and a Central Building Authority decision dated 20 April 2026.
Effective May 1, 2026, the CBA stopped accepting construction drawings prepared by technicians for buildings larger than 1,200 square feet. Only registered members of the Association of Professional Architects of Belize or the Association of Professional Engineers of Belize are recognised as “registered design professionals” and can submit such plans.
The association argues the decision was introduced with just ten days’ notice and without consultation. It says the move has disrupted existing contracts and stripped technicians of the ability to operate independently. The group claims the regulations violate constitutional protections, including the right to work, equal protection under the law, and protection from deprivation of property without compensation.
The association also warned of wider consequences for ordinary Belizeans. With technicians historically offering more affordable services, their exclusion could drive up the cost of construction drawings at a time when building costs are already prohibitive for many.
“Technicians do not pose a safety risk to Belize’s building industry,” the association said. “They are its backbone.”
