Manatee Found Dead in Placencia Lagoon

Early Sunday morning, the Crocodile Research Coalition received a report of a deceased manatee in the Placencia Lagoon. Upon examination, researchers observed propeller marks along the animal’s back, indicating it likely died from a boat strike.

In a statement, the organisation said: “This heartbreaking loss serves as an important reminder that our actions on the water have consequences. Please slow down, stay alert, and be mindful when navigating areas where wildlife may be present.”

Manatees are a protected species in Belize, and beyond being part of the lagoon’s natural heritage, they attract visitors from around the world who come to experience the country’s wildlife.

“If we fail to exercise caution and good judgment, we risk creating a future where these animals no longer exist in our waters. Protecting wildlife starts with each of us,” the coalition said.
