What Led to the Fatal Caye Caulker Confrontation?
The family of Oscar Flota is calling for justice following his killing on Caye Caulker Saturday night.
His niece, Mariel Moh, told News 5 the news came as a shock. “We never expected that to happen to him and the way they did it, yes, it was very shocking to us,” she said.
Eyewitnesses reported that Flota was struck multiple times with a shovel. Police have indicated to the family that the incident may have stemmed from an argument or misunderstanding, but relatives say they are still waiting for clear answers.
Moh added that some of the information reaching the family suggests the confrontation may have involved people known to Flota, though those details remain unconfirmed.
Originally from Orange Walk, Flota had been living on Caye Caulker with one of his three sons and worked in construction. Relatives described him as a caring provider. “He would never turn his back on his family. He was always there, always smiling, a funny person,” Moh recalled.
She also rejected speculation that alcohol may have played a role. “When he’s drunk, I can say he was not an aggressive person,” she said.
