Police Commissioner Calls LIU Suspension a “Necessary Reset”

Questions are still swirling over the government’s decision to pause the Leadership Intervention Unit program, but tonight, the Commissioner of Police is framing it as a necessary reset. Dr. Richard Rosado says the pause creates an opportunity to take a closer look at whether these social intervention efforts are actually delivering results. He stresses that programs like these must be backed by clear evidence and real impact. This follows earlier comments from former Home Affairs Minister Oscar Mira, now on a leave of absence, who defended halting funding until the program can prove it’s making a measurable difference.

“ You have to appreciate that social intervention program must be based on evidence. And under Minister Mira tenure, certain feedback we receive that require that us to do some assessment of the social intervention programs and based, or based on the facts to determine whether they actually having a impact. I believe by doing an assessment, it give us the opportunity to show that we are accountable, transparent, and we are we embrace evidence-based approach, and we embrace continuous improvement. So it is, it give us the opportunity to make a thorough assessment of what need to be done.”

“When did that assessment start, and when will it conclude, and will those results be made public, seeing as it’s youth from our own society who are beneficiaries?”

Dr. Richard Rosado

“Please appreciate that only one or two programs is currently under assessment or on a pause, temporarily on a pause. Then minister, Minister Mira and CEO and I, we sat with the director of the LIU. The minister explained his position to him, to the director. They were given, I believe, a month or two notice for, to inform the individuals on the ground of the programs then that were under assessment. So there were ample time for us to do the necessary adjustment, and everybody involved knew about the adjustment that, or the assessment that were being made.”

“But so then that indicates the assessment is concluded.”

Dr. Richard Rosado

“The assessment is in the process of wrapping up. But we do recognize that whatever social intervention program we implement, there must be meaningful behavioral change.”

Despite being under review, Acting LIU Director Andrew Dawson says the program already has accountability measures in place and is delivering results, even as improvements continue.
