For years, they sold their day’s catch in the open along the roadside near the Yabra Bridge. Today, that changed. The Belize City Council officially opened the Yabra Fish Market.

For fishermen like Joseph Brown, the moment carries deeper meaning. “This day has finally arrived… A dream come true for the Yabra fishermen folks,” he said during this morning’s launch.

The newly constructed space will permanently house six fishermen, sheltered from the sun, heat, and rain, Brown added. The new market now provides more organised vending for both sellers and customers.

Councillor Evan Thompson framed the opening as more than infrastructure. He said, “Today is a celebration of people; it is a celebration of partnership, of what can happen when a community’s needs are acted upon and heard.”

Thompson said the market now stands as a visible investment in small livelihoods and community pride.
