BEL Heads to Court Over Severance Fight

The dispute over severance at Belize Electricity Limited is now moving into the courts. BEL confirmed in its latest statement on the matter that it seeks legal guidance in the High Court on how recent rulings should be applied and requests declaratory relief on severance obligations.

“The Company anticipates that the Court’s guidance will assist in establishing a clear and consistent framework for addressing severance claims going forward,” BEL said, adding that it “aims to ensure that its actions are fully aligned with the law and grounded in transparency and fairness.”

As previously reported, tensions between former energy workers and BEL escalated further last week after documents surfaced showing that senior management had previously received exit packages, while other workers were reportedly treated differently.

The disclosures have intensified long-standing concerns about consistency and fairness in how severance has been applied within the company.
