For small farmers in northern Belize, help on the land just got a fresh boost.

Belize and Mexico have officially launched phase two of the Sembrando Vida programme, expanding a project that supports hundreds of small farmers with tools, training and financial assistance focused on improving livelihoods and strengthening rural communities.

The launch took place on Thursday in San Narciso village, Corozal District. The programme is being implemented by Mexico’s international development agency, AMEXCID, which supports development projects across several countries, including Belize.

Phase two builds on commitments made in 2022, following a bilateral agreement signed during a visit by then Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The first phase, launched in June 2023, benefited approximately 2,000 small farmers across the country.

According to officials, Sembrando Vida supports farmers through training, technical assistance, and inputs such as seeds, tools, and fertiliser, while also promoting environmental restoration and stronger rural communities.

Authorities say the programme is also about rebuilding social and economic stability in farming communities, with emphasis on food security and income generation.
