BYD Launches SUV Promising Relief at Pump

Rising fuel prices are hitting Belizeans hard, but a new player is promising a smarter way to drive. Today, BYD Belize rolled out its latest hybrid SUV, pitching it as a cost-saving, fuel-efficient option for everyday drivers. The big question: can it really ease the pressure at the pump? We spoke with Managing Director Ryan Marin to find out what sets it apart.

“This could not happen at a better time to have BYD in Belize. Overnight we saw a light switch, fuel prices started to climb. Not only is fuel prices an issue, but the availability of fuel down the road. So, BYD is actually inventing a product that solves a serious problem. And the solution is to have electrified mobility that costumers can have a charger installed at their home or use the public network and basically be free of having to go the gas station or depend on the high gas prices plaquing us right now. I have been in the auto industry for fourteen years on the new vehicles side and I know that we are a very small minority of the amount of vehicles sold in Belize and the thing I am hoping to change is to be able to give people options with affordability with a new car. What does that mean? It means a safer car, it means something that you have a team of people here to stand behind the product. Today in particular we are introducing the BYD Song Plus. This is a midsize SUV, a plugin hybrid. You have to think of this vehicle as an EV first, but it does have an engine on board, so you are able to drive to Placencia, Corozal, PG, any part of the country, without having to worry about your range, how I am going to get back, where am I going to charge. So can use the existing fuel network. This is very efficient when it comes to fuel. The engine only comes on when it needs to.”
