People in the area told News 5, “If a big truck pass there, it will go in that hole. It’s big and deep.”

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) says engineers inspected the area and found that the metal culvert running beneath the road is still in good condition. However, the road surface and the material supporting it above the culvert gave way, causing part of the highway to collapse.

Repair crews are now working to stabilise the area and restore the damaged section of road. In a statement, the ministry said, “Every effort is being made to expedite the repairs while maintaining the highest standards of safety.”

Motorists are being urged to use “alternative routes” where possible and follow directions from workers and traffic personnel at the site.

“Further updates, including notification of the reopening of the highway to vehicular traffic, will be communicated as soon as additional information becomes available.”
