Elon Musk is No Longer a Trillionaire

Elon Musk is no longer a trillionaire after a sharp decline in SpaceX’s stock price and new restrictions placed on a significant portion of his Tesla holdings reduced his net worth below the trillion-dollar mark.

According to estimates, Musk’s fortune fell to approximately $962 billion by Tuesday, down from a peak of $1.45 trillion reached earlier this month.

Musk became the world’s first trillionaire on June 12 when SpaceX’s historic $75 billion initial public offering pushed his net worth to an estimated $1.1 trillion. Days later, SpaceX shares surged, briefly driving his wealth to a record high.

However, SpaceX stock has since dropped by about 31 percent from its peak, erasing hundreds of billions of dollars in market value and significantly reducing Musk’s fortune.

The decline was compounded by changes to Musk’s Tesla holdings. Last week, he surrendered $7.1 billion worth of Tesla shares to cover the exercise cost of stock options awarded under his 2018 compensation package. Following a court battle over the package, the shares were converted into restricted stock that Musk could lose if he leaves Tesla before January 2028.

Despite losing his trillionaire status, Musk remains the world’s richest person by a wide margin. Most of his wealth remains tied to his stakes in SpaceX and Tesla, making his net worth highly dependent on stock market performance.

Analysts note that Musk’s fortune is largely made up of company shares rather than cash, meaning fluctuations in the value of his businesses can rapidly add or erase billions from his net worth.
