Flood Risk Heightens Nationwide as Heavy Rainfall Continues

Authorities are warning of increasing flood risks across Belize as heavy rainfall continues to saturate the ground, with hydrologists saying the entire country should remain alert.

Principal Hydrologist Tennielle Hendy said updated forecasts show worsening conditions, particularly moving into the northern districts. “Looking at the new updates we have, we see that area advancing to most of the country, and aligning with Chief Met in terms of the precipitation moving into the north,” Hendy explained. She said flood risks are becoming more widespread, with both urban and localized flooding expected.

“We also see very high protentional for flooding in the north, mainly linked to localized flooding or urban flooding, associated with excessive rainfall,” she said. Hendy stressed that the threat is not limited to one region, urging nationwide vigilance. “So, quite literally the entire country has to be on call from what we are seeing, especially those in the central areas and the south,” she said.

“Recall that we have these hills. When the rainfall hit those features in the environment they tend to flow rather quickly down the slope and into the lower lying areas,” Hendy said. She specifically urged residents in southern Belize near mountainous regions to remain alert during periods of heavy rainfall. “If you are off the eastern slope of the Maya Mountains into the south, you definitely need to be on the lookout whenever there is excessive rainfall notice or advisory for your area,” she added.

Hendy also warned that western Belize could experience a combination of riverine and localized flooding if rainfall persists. Residents across the country are being urged to monitor official advisories closely as additional rainfall could quickly lead to rising water levels in vulnerable communities.
