High-Speed Police Chase in Belmopan Ends in Gunfire, Two Detained

A joint operation between several units of the Belize Police Department led to the detention of two male persons, a firearm and several live rounds of ammunition this morning in Belmopan. Authorities were in hot pursuit of the men as they drove through the city in black Nissan Altima. During the pursuit police opened fire on the individuals. A search of the vehicle revealed a security uniform and a Belize Defense Force uniform. Residents of the Capital City were left in shock after witnessing the mid-morning ordeal. ASP Stacy Smith told us more.

“Police have detained two male persons for firearm related offences, following a joint operation which consisted of surveillance and tactical response teams. This surveillance climaxed at around eight thirty a.m. on Thursday in Belmopan City when the people were apprehended and seized was a nine-millimeter pistol which contained a magazine with six lives round of nine-millimeter ammunition and additional eight live rounds of nine-millimeter ammunition found in the vehicle. Twenty-eight seven point six two rounds of ammunition and sixteen point two-two live rounds of ammunition. Given that the responding officers would have discharged their weapons, the department’s internal review mechanism is on the way.”
