Jaguar or Something Else? Officials Investigate Livestock Attacks

Wildlife officials are investigating reports that a jaguar may be responsible for a series of livestock attacks in Buena Vista Village, Cayo, last Tuesday.

A response team from the Corozal Sustainable Future Initiative (CSFI) visited the farm after a local farmer, who had recently lost livestock, suspected the big cat was behind the attacks.

Rather than confirming a jaguar was responsible right away, the team carried out an on-site investigation, documenting evidence and setting up monitoring measures to determine exactly which animal was behind the attacks.

“As with all conflict cases, it is important that conclusions are based on evidence rather than assumptions,” CSFI said in a social media post.

Officials met with the affected farmer and a neighbouring landowner to discuss the incidents and explain how human-wildlife conflicts are investigated. They spoke about ways to reduce future conflicts, as deforestation and habitat loss continue to push wildlife closer to farms and communities.

The Belize Forest Department assisted with the response, and officials say the investigation will rely on evidence before determining whether a jaguar was involved.
