Which High School Will Dominate the Super Nationals 2026?
Belize’s top high school athletes poured into the Belize City Civic Center this morning as the high school level of Super Nationals 2026 officially got underway. The opening ceremony kicked off the competition this morning before athletes head off to battle for top spots across volleyball, basketball, football, and athletics.
Each district made their entrance at the Civic Center in their assigned colours. Corozal in pink, Orange Walk in orange, Belize in blue, Cayo in black, Stann Creek in yellow, and Toledo in green.
The National Sports Council describes Super Nationals as the premier national youth sporting event, a first of its kind designed to elevate school sports, identify talent, and create pathways to university scholarships and international opportunities for Belize’s best young athletes.
The event runs in two phases. The primary school level wrapped up last week, and the high school competition spans from today, June 29th, through to July 3rd.
For primary school athletes, Minister of State for Youth and Sports Devin Daly drew on his own athletic background to challenge the young competitors and offered what he calls his three Cs of success. “Communication, Commitment and Consistency. Success will not come overnight. You have to try at it every single day,” he said.
However, Daly reserved a sharper message for the high schoolers today specifically. “Can you discover what your true grit is? Some of the most talented athletes in the world came from troubled homes, hard circumstances, and humble beginnings, and truthfully, those are the things that really make the story much more valuable and memorable.”
Daly also placed responsibility on the athletes themselves, stating, “We could spend all the money allotted to sports, make all the facilities pretty, have the best equipment, and bring in high-level coaches, but if the athletes don’t match that investment, we’re not going anywhere,” he said. “So, my challenge to the athletes is, ‘What are you doing when nobody is watching?’ Daly added.
Meanwhile, National Sports Council Coordinator Kaya Cattouse reminded athletes that the week ahead carries lessons far beyond the scoreboard. “You were selected because you earned it; the coaches believed in you, your district believed in you, and now for the remainder of this week, this is your moment,” she said.
“There will be victories, challenges and moments that test you, but remember this: sport has never only been about winning; it teaches discipline, sacrifice, resilience, and sport teaches us to rise every single time we are challenged and not just on the court or on the field, but it transfers to every part of our daily lives,” Cattouse added.
The question on everyone’s minds for the next five days is, ‘Which district will take home the most wins?’
