Mayor Wally Lashes Opposition for Desperate Allegations
A planned opposition press conference in San Pedro promising explosive findings from the Town Council’s audit report never materialized on Wednesday, after party officials abruptly called off the event. The cancellation has drawn criticism from Mayor Wally Nuñez, who says the opposition misrepresented the documents they were preparing to discuss. According to Nuñez, the figures being circulated are not from an audit at all, but from a budget prospectus outlining proposed expenditures. He argues that the opposition either misunderstood the document or deliberately distorted its contents to score political points.
Wally Nunez, Mayor, San Pedro
“It is quite disappointing to see that the opponent probably don’t know their arm from their elbow. When you see these things what they have posted is is of perspectives. It is not the financial audit. I know that they have been trying very difficult– very hard. They have been trying very hard to try to pin something on me personally. If you realize they have highlighted there the office of the mayor. And they are trying to point out certain things that are not factual. When you see the allowances that they’re talking about they are– they’re trying to say that this is for two persons and this is for the entire council itself. It is not for one or two persons. So it is just the entire thing has been misconstrued. They are taking out information from it specifically to try to misinform the public. When it comes to the office of the mayor, you have apart from the allowances, which is the what they were highlighting, you have the salaries of the staff. And here we also have expenditure or proposed expenditure for festivities, which falls under the office of the mayor, which we all know that we have national celebrations different types of celebrations throughout the year to, to bring the local economy or give a boost to the local economy. It is part of that as well. So that– I just wanted to make that clear so that people know that everything that they’re seeing here, it is a proposed amount. It is not actual expenditure.”
Mayor Nunez says anyone can access the town council’s audit reports from the last five years.
