PM Looks to Expand Trade with Honduras

Prime Minister John Briceño and Honduran President Nasry Asfura discussed closer cooperation between Belize and Honduras, including the possibility of a trade agreement.

Briceño met Asfura at the Presidential House in Tegucigalpa on August 24 during an official visit to Honduras. The leaders discussed health, security, trade, regional integration, climate change and connectivity.

Briceño also raised the possibility of expanding trade and investment between the two countries. He says Belize’s trade arrangements with Guatemala and its recent Partial Scope Agreement with El Salvador make Honduras a potential partner as Belize continues expanding its economic ties with Central America.

Regional air connectivity was also discussed, including Belize’s participation in initiatives associated with the Central American Corporation for Air Navigation Services (COCESNA).

The discussions also looked at ways to improve connections and make it easier for people and goods to move between Central America and the Caribbean.

Briceño also spoke about Belize’s role as Pro Tempore President of the Central American Integration System (SICA) for the second half of 2026. He said Belize will continue building stronger ties with Central America while maintaining its Caribbean identity and connections.

The Belizean delegation included Health and Wellness Minister Kevin Bernard, the CEOs of the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministries of Investment and Civil Aviation, Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, and Health and Wellness, as well as Belize’s Honorary Consul in Tegucigalpa.
