Special Sitting Held for Two Pillars of Belize’s Justice System

The legal community paused today to celebrate the lives of two women whose work helped shape Belize’s justice system for generations. Judges, attorneys, family members, and colleagues gathered at the Supreme Court in Belize City for a special memorial sitting honoring former Senior Counsel Robertha Magnus-Usher and Agnes Segura-Gillett. Both women left an enduring mark on the legal profession, and those who knew them best reflected on the legacy they leave behind. We spoke with the President of the Belize Bar Association about their contributions and the impact they had on the country’s administration of justice.

“Unfortunately, two very great women in our profession. I am sure you have heard all the remembrances and stories shared. These were women who certainly left their mark on the legal profession in Belize, and they were excellent members of the Belizean community. So, it was only fitting that us as professionals as attorneys gather to celebrate them and remember them and their legacy.”

“Her passing came as a shock. She was a determined person, lively, ambitious. No matter what she accomplished in life, she never settled. Shen kept striving for more. I was privileged to not know Ms. Gillett just as a boss, but a mentor. She was a brilliant mind, generous loving, welcoming and she welcomed us as a part of her family and she never failed to teach us to share her knowledge.”

Magnus-Usher passed away in July 2025. Segura-Gillett passed in May of this year.
