Taiwan Expands Trade Office to Include Belize and Five Other Regional Allies

Taiwan has expanded its regional trade platform to strengthen economic ties with Belize and five other diplomatic allies in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Latin American and Caribbean Trade Office (LACTO) officially opened in Taipei on Friday, replacing the former Central America Trade Office (CATO), which primarily focused on trade relations with Belize and Guatemala.

The expanded office will now also serve Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, creating a regional network aimed at increasing trade, investment, tourism, and business opportunities.

Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung described the move as a “new chapter” in economic cooperation between Taiwan and its partners in Latin America and the Caribbean. He said the office will help connect businesses, promote investment, and strengthen commercial relationships.

LACTO Executive Director Augusto Chou-Fu Chan said the expansion represents more than just a name change, but a broader mission to support businesses, encourage industrial cooperation, and create new opportunities between Taiwan and the region.

The office plans to promote products and industries from the participating countries, including agriculture, fisheries, food, tourism, and investment opportunities. Activities will include trade exhibitions, business matchmaking events, procurement meetings, and official exchanges.

Belize, which was one of the original countries served by CATO, is expected to continue benefiting from the platform as the expanded office works to increase visibility for regional products and attract investment.
