“There’s Still a Lot of Work Left to Do”: Belmopan Mayor Seeks Re-election
Belmopan Mayor Pablo Cawich is seeking a second term with his full council slate, saying unfinished work across the municipality, with road and infrastructure improvements being a priority.
Cawich, who was elected in 2024, says the council has made progress over the past two and a half years but still has work to do to bring the city to where it wants it to be.
“When we took office in 2024, the finances and the physical municipality were in a mess,” Cawich said. “We believe that we are in a much better position, but there’s still a lot of work left to do.”
He said the council has been prioritising projects and seeking partnerships with other organisations to help fund and deliver improvements.
With UDP candidate Richie Galvez challenging him for the mayor’s seat, Cawich defended his council’s record and dismissed Galvez as a challenger, citing his involvement in the previous UDP administration, which he accused of leaving the municipality in a “very, very terrible state.”
Cawich also says he will continue working with Oscar Mira despite the “Mira Millions” procurement scandal, noting that Mira is Belmopan’s area representative and working with him is necessary for the city’s development.
“It’s unfortunate what has transpired and what he’s going through, but that is something for a higher level,” Cawich said. “ I have to stay positive and continue moving Belmopan forward.”
