Belize could soon see a renewed push for deeper economic ties with the United States. During his Senate confirmation hearing, U.S. Ambassador-designate André Bauer made it clear, he wants to expand cooperation and boost investment between the two countries. From tourism to trade, Bauer highlighted opportunities for growth and signaled that his private sector background could help drive stronger business connections. Here’s a look at what he had to say.

Andre Bauer, U.S. Ambassador to Belize Nominee

“The United States and Belize have a strong bi-lateral relationship. The United States is Belize’s largest source of tourism with more than a million Americans visiting annually, additionally more than eighty-five thousand Belizeans living in the U.S., further strengthening the close ties between our two nations. Tourism remains a vital driver in Belize’s economy, supporting jobs and economic opportunity throughout the country. If confirmed, I look forward to strengthening economic ties between both nations, to support tourism and trade and expand avenues of cooperation and investment. Having spent much of my career in the private sector, I understand the power of U.S. business and investment. If confirmed I work to strengthen commercial ties between our two countries, creating a stable investment climate where U.S. businesses can grow and invest and also flourish, which is essential to expanding opportunities for both of our countries.”

U.S. ambassadorial nominees are confirmed through a constitutional process that requires nomination by the President, vetting and a hearing by the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and a majority vote by the full U.S. Senate
