A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday morning, killing at least 35 people, injuring more than 200 others, and causing widespread destruction across parts of Mindanao.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck at approximately 7:37 a.m. local time at a depth of 35 kilometers. The epicenter was located off the coast near General Santos City in Sarangani Province.

Authorities reported that at least 13 of the fatalities were caused by a landslide triggered by the quake in Sarangani. Rescue teams continue to search damaged areas as emergency response efforts remain underway.

Photos and videos from affected communities showed collapsed buildings, damaged businesses, and frightened residents fleeing into open spaces. In General Santos City, a fast-food restaurant partially collapsed while several commercial structures sustained significant damage.

The earthquake struck on the first day of the new academic year, causing panic at schools across the region. Videos circulating on social media showed students taking cover as classrooms and school grounds shook violently.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered government agencies to begin evacuation and rescue operations immediately and urged residents in coastal areas to follow tsunami warnings and move to higher ground.

The Philippines lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a seismically active region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
