Belize Media Mourns the Loss of “Brother Fem”

He was a journalist, musician, and man of faith that the country came to know as “Brother Fem,” known to few by his full name, Eufemio Cruz. Cruz passed away at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital this morning at around 11:30 after being hospitalised for injuries caused by a fall at his home, according to reports.

For years, Brother Fem’s voice was a familiar presence in Belizean living rooms, first as a correspondent for Love FM and Plus TV, then as a co-host on Plus TV’s beloved morning programme Rise and Shine alongside director Louis Wade. But for those who knew him, he was far more than a face on television.

“He did not get the recognition, nor did he seek after the accolades. Grassroots to the bone, Breda Fem. What a loss,” a colleague wrote.

His daughter also shared her tribute online, saying, “My father had blessed hands, and I am truly grateful for the way he helped shape and guide me into the young woman I am today,” she said.

For many, Cruz was a mentor, a minister, a musician, and a friend who never chased the spotlight.

Less than a month ago, the media community also mourned the death of 39-year-old reporter Aaron Humes after suffering a heart attack at his home an afternoon.

Brother Fem is the fourth member of the media to die recently. Ruben Morales Iglesias of Breaking Belize News passed away on March 16, while freelance journalist Roy Davis died on February 26. Aaron Humes, also of Breaking Belize News, died on May 19th.
