‘Be Alert’: Central and South of Belize Warned of Flash Flooding

Floodwaters and rising rivers continue to threaten parts of Belize after persistent rainfall battered several parts of the country on Thursday. The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) urged residents in its third information bulletin to stay alert as conditions remain unstable.

NEMO and the National Hydrological Service (NHS) said flood warnings remain in effect for central and south-eastern Belize, particularly communities along the Sittee River in Stann Creek District.

Water levels on the Sittee River at Kendal have already risen above bankfull levels. “Continued excessive rainfall will continue producing urban and flash floods… Take immediate action. Flooding can happen quickly and without warning,” both authorities said.

A ‘Flood Alert’ also remains in place for western and central Belize, where authorities continue to closely monitor river levels. Residents living near rivers, streams and flood-prone areas are being urged to remain prepared should conditions deteriorate further.

Several roads and bridges in the affected areas remain open but require caution. Hopkins Road is currently accessible only to high-clearance vehicles.

The agencies warned motorists not to drive through flooded roadways and urged the public to remain vigilant for debris, damaged road surfaces and rapidly rising water levels.

Conditions nationwide are being monitored by the National Meteorological Service, NEMO, and NHS.
