Jaguar Attacks Dogs in Hattieville
Residents of Hattieville are reporting two separate incidents involving a jaguar that attacked dogs in the village over the weekend. The Belize Forest Department has been notified.
According to a resident, the first incident reportedly occurred on Friday morning when a jaguar entered a yard and attacked a dog. The resident said the dog died following a struggle lasting approximately 35 to 45 minutes. The jaguar also damaged a vehicle during the incident.
The family said they initially believed the disturbance involved a cat interacting with dogs.
A second incident was reported on Saturday morning around the same time, when the same jaguar allegedly returned and attacked dogs. In that case, the dogs, reportedly five in total, were able to confront the animal and chase it away.
Following the reports, villagers contacted Hattieville Police and the Forestry Department on Monday. Officials later visited the area, and on Tuesday morning, a cage trap was brought in to attempt to capture the animal.
